There was a shopping mall
Now it's all covered with flowers
you've got it, you've got it
If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower
you've got it, you've got it
–Talking Heads, (Nothing But) Flowers
To create these images, I digitally removed all parts of the photographs not in direct sunlight, then filled in these shadow areas with bright, flat color. The photographs were made in places of cultivated or re-emergent wilderness: gardens of native plantings, the edges of nature preserves, neglected peripheral urban spaces.
I used a 4x5 film camera to photograph these, and print them as archival inkjets on rag paper, sized between approximately 18” x 22” and 41” x 51”, in editions of 3 plus one AP.
